You first see her in the aisle of the Asian mini-mart, between the chili crisp and the Shin Black ramen. You're both wearing K95s, hers pink and yours black, and are the only two people other than the clerk wearing masks. She's pale and narrow, wrapped in a maroon sweater at least two sizes too big, the yarn so plush you ache to rub your cheek in it. She's straw-blonde and white-girl wispy in a way that should look fragile, but there's a sharpness to her. A study in angles.

And then you notice her shadows.
