Fun meta asks for writers!
OH BOY I LOVE MEMES!!!
- Tell us about your current project(s) – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?
- Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project
- What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)
- Share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like)
- What character that you’re writing do you most identify with?
- What character do you have the most fun writing?
- What do you think are the characteristics of your personal writing style? Would others agree?
- Is what you like to write the same as what you like to read?
- Are you more of a drabble or a longfic kind of writer? Pantser or plotter? Do you wish you were the other?
- How would you describe your writing process?
- What do you envy in other writers?
- Do you want your writing to be famous?
- Do you share your writing online? (Drop a link!) Do you have projects you’ve kept just for yourself?
- At what point in writing do you come up with a title?
- Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?
- Tried anything new with your writing lately? (style, POV, genre, fandom?)
- Do you think readers perceive your work - or you - differently to you? What do you think would surprise your readers about your writing or your motivations?
- Do any of your stories have alternative versions? (plotlines that you abandoned, AUs of your own work, different characterisations?) Tell us about them.
- Is there something you always find yourself repeating in your writing? (favourite verb, something you describe ‘too often’, trope you can’t get enough of?)
- Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)
- What other medium do you think your story would work well as? (film, webcomic, animated series?)
- Do you reread your old works? How do you feel about them?
- What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?
- Would you say your writing has changed over time?
- What part of writing is the most fun?

(If the latter, I'm curious about numbers 7, 8, and 20.)

7) What do you think are the characteristics of your personal writing style? Would others agree?
I try to focus on sensory immersion and emotional entanglements. Also, I write a bunch about food and sex. I think others would agree. :P
8) Is what you like to write the same as what you like to read?
Mostly, yes? One of the reasons I write is because I love a particular scenario or idea but can’t read it (yet). There is a variety of stuff I read but don’t write because a) my imagination doesn’t work that way, or b) I might enjoy a particular take on a character, but struggle with writing it myself. And very rarely, I write things that I don’t actively seek out to read because I am very particular with my headcanons or character dynamics.
20) Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)
I am cheating and C&Ping my answer from Tumblr because I’ve already answered it there!
OH MY GOD this is one of my favorite things about writing longer stories because it just gives me so much more room to go hog wild with references and to develop particular themes!!! Like with Danse Does Vegas, I want to point out that the Winchester mystery house and the eternal light bulb are both real locations in California, and the Atari burial site is a real thing but I was originally thinking about the rapid obsolescence of technology and how an item as simple as paper or books can be read centuries after they are printed, but digital media is impossible to access unless you have the appropriate technology to read them. Also how synths are theoretically immortal at first glance (barring injury) but also hey what about if/when their parts start breaking down???
Oh, and the Donut Dunkers Club is also real. As is the Las Vegas Pinball Hall of Fame.
(asdfsgs if anyone wants to ask this question about a particular fic, feel free. I’m still just gushing over Danse Does Vegas because it’s my most recent longfic.)

I don’t feel like I write the same character a lot, or at least not consistently, so I’m not sure how to answer this question? Like, right now I’m having a lot of fun writing Tyreen for this Tyreen/Amara fic because she is so over the top villainous in the game, and it’s fun sanding away the edges so she’s more of a horrible goblin accidental-prisoner. Poor impulse control, mouthy, arrogant, just let her run her mouth and see what happens next. I also fully admit it’s because Borderlands is such a goofy canon anyways, so I feel more comfortable with writing her in villain decay instead of fully dwelling on all the horrible repercussions of everything she’s done.
14) At what point in writing do you come up with a title?
Usually either halfway through as something thematically appropriate rises, or at the very end when I’m desperately struggling to figure out what to title it before posting! (also I fully admit I C&P this answer from Tumblr, because I answered it there first!)
23) What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?
(Another Tumblr C&P, because this was a very long and rambly answer!)
Judging from the dates of my scrap files…? Preston/Virgil/Madison OT3. I’m still fuzzy on when the fic actually starts (or at least what the first scene should be), but after Virgil fails to reverse this mutation, Madison learns about her old colleague camped out in the Glowing Sea and goes ‘nope, you can be more useful with us here’ and sends Preston to recruit him. So all three of them are with the Minutemen, and the Institute and BoS have already been destroyed. Madison is also an augmented human (much like Kellogg) with enhanced reflexes, strength, and an awesome cybernetic arm.
Virgil’s always had a little bit of a terrified crush on Madison from back in the Institute, and falls in love with Preston’s kindness and optimism. Madison is also in love with Preston, and fully enjoys stepping on Virgil. Madison and Virgil end up very carefully interrogating each other on their intentions towards Preston (“I’ve seen the way you look at him. Preston’s a good man.”) and Madison’s ready to give Virgil the shovel talk before Preston walks in and explains he has two hands, thank you very much! Cue smoochy OT3 stuff, each of them trying to advance the settlements in their own ways, and catching rumors of a seed vault, holding prewar fruits, veg, and samples. So then they go adventuring across the Commonwealth!
...like, I have a lot of stuff I want to happen, but still figuring out how to make it a workable story.

I have two projects I am very excited about!
A Most Edible Thistle is a 20k word Josie/Vivienne (Dragon Age) fic that covers weird food history, assassins, and the delicate process of falling in love. I’ve been working on and off on it since April, and it’s in its second draft. I’m just waiting for Black Emporium to wrap up before sending it to a beta. :)
I also have a Borderlands fic! The working title is never gonna say I’m sorry but I fully admit it’s a working title only and I may change it before it’s done! It’s an Amara/Tyreen fic where Tyreen’s brother betrays her, and Tyreen’s captured by the Crimson Raiders. She’s an angry gremlin and absolutely not ready to join the good guys, but ends up falling in love with Amara and having big feelings all over the place. It’s fun because Borderlands is such a goofy canon to play with, and I like writing Tyreen as messy and terrible.
15) Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?
Titles! I can give a quick summary (or just post an opening paragraph or something) in the summary section, but a pithy title? Man, get me back to the drawing board.
Also, tags are easier because usually I just list out the tropes and kinks as I reread my own fic. :’)
(Also, fully admit that this answer is cross-posted from Tumblr!)
25) What part of writing is the most fun?
Everything is fun until I have to actually write!!!!
Jokes aside, I love when I first get the inspiration and start shuffling ideas into order to make a loose outline. If I’m lucky enough to have time, energy, and inspiration all strike at the same time, those are really good flow days. I can write a bunch of words and it feels easy, effortless.
Unfortunately, most days aren’t like that for me. But there’s a different kind of satisfaction in when I’ve started stitching things together and it’s recognizable as a story. Maybe not the exact story I had in mind with the dramatic whooshes and musical accompaniment or whatever, but I can start to recognize it as something Not Terrible and that I would love to read, if I hadn’t written it myself.

2 (curious minds want to know!), 9 (I'm a total pantser, but I think you might be a plotter?), 19 (How many times can I write that a character Crossed Their Arms Meaningfully??)

2) Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project
I have a Borderlands 3 fic that I’m really excited about!!! It’s fully self-indulgent fix-it and also indulges my love for Hot Lady Villains! It’s essentially a redemption arc (or at least a ‘hey I am just starting to recognize why what I did was bad and maybe I can’t actually fix it but at least I can start to do better’) and one of the biggest dramatic scenes that I am most excited to write is the big finish, the culmination of the entire fic, in which Tyreen is ready to go sacrifice herself and SAVE THE WORLD before realizing that her absolutely-not-her-girlfriend is grabbing on to her and trying to make sure she doesn’t kill herself. A lot of screaming like “I’m not sorry! I’m gonna do the thing and you can’t stop me!” and “You stupid idiot! Let me help you, you don’t have to DIE!” and passionate making out while wrestling. Ultimately finishing in the two not-girlfriends yelling about how death isn’t redemption, you gotta work at it, not just expect one big dramatic gesture to make everything alright.
I fully admit it’s a big, melodramatic finish for a big, melodramatic fic but dang it, that’s what my heart wants!!! And I just hope that when I write the scene and get around to revising it into shape, it’ll deliver the same emotional whammies that I’m having for it.
9) Are you more of a drabble or a longfic kind of writer? Pantser or plotter? Do you wish you were the other?
MAN, I think I can do drabbles just fine if they’re quick Tumblr prompts (like the ‘50 kiss prompts’ type of thing) or don’t reflect a larger story, but I need an outline whenever I sit down to write something longer. Even if the outline is just a PWP where it’s ‘X and Y meet, do these various things, and fall asleep snuggling.’ It gives me a roadmap to follow, or at least signposts me in the right direction.
I think I’m more of a plotter, but I don’t fully outline as much as other people I know. I generally try to stick the emotional feeling of a fic before the concrete specifics of action. The idea of trying to pants anything over 1k words is just. DAUNTING.
19) Is there something you always find yourself repeating in your writing? (favourite verb, something you describe ‘too often’, trope you can’t get enough of?)
I will go into endless, unnecessary depth about food unless I stop myself!!!! I really do believe in the importance of food as a way of tying in culture, memory, and worldbuilding, but also like asdfshs I don’t need to describe every single meal the characters eat. I also am guilty of using ‘crook (their) fingers in a beckoning motion’ when describing characters doing vaginal fingering (to the point my beta pointed that out!), and an inordinate fondness for ‘crenellations’ when describing teeth marks on skin.
Thanks for taking the time to ask, I am here to Cross My Arms Meaningfully. ;D
