1. How many are you happy with? 8/20, the ones with asterisks. Which mostly tells me I have an allergy to capital letters and punctuation.

2. How many are... not great? Most of them, I feel? They tend to be very vague and nondescript, or don’t convey the tone of the fic in the way that I’m hoping.

3. How many did you scramble for at the last minute?
Most of them!!!! Usually going “wait, this needs a title. What don’t I hate?”

4. How many did you know before you started writing/creating, or near the beginning? “Building mountains in your memory,” “what we don’t talk about,” and “breath (and all the ways of holding)” are a few of the rare examples. “Building mountains in your memory” was partly a misremembered line from Florence and the Machine

The monument of a memory
You tear it down in your head
Don't make the mountain your enemy
Get out, get up there instead

But I was thinking a lot about the impermanence of memory and Liara’s work as an archaeologist, thinking about lost history, personal history, and how that plays into the grieving process, especially coming from someone who is part of such a long-lived species. This was a case where knowing the title actually helped me write the fic, because I ‘knew’ the mood I was aiming for and could tailor my writing appropriately.

“What we don’t talk about” was exactly what it says on the tin; two people carefully not-talking their way around some heavy issues. Also Zaeed not-talking about the fact that he thinks he might actually be in love. The title popped in my head as soon as I thought about the kind of relationship I wanted to write, and worked as a reminder not to have them over-speak or elaborate on all the important not-talking things nibbling at the edges.

And “breath (and all the ways of holding)” was loosely based off a book I’d read by Esther Parel, Mating in Captivity, talking about the flux between domesticity and sexual desire. One of the analogies she used was about how intimacy was like breathing: you’ll die if you can’t inhale, but holding your breath won’t keep you alive either. I already knew that the Leliana/Morrigan relationship was stormy and tumultuous, and I wanted part of that emphasis to be that they know they can’t settle down in domestic bliss; it’s just not in their natures or their lives, and would have been completely impossible in that ten-year span between Origins and Inquisition. That doesn’t mean they don’t care for one another, but that they’re just not suited to a ‘typical’ relationship. And I wanted that fic to be about them figuring out how to make themselves work.

5. How many are quotes from songs or poems? None, surprisingly! Unless you count that misquoted ‘building mountains in your memory.’ I usually come up with ideas that need titles rather than lines that inspire ideas, if that makes sense? So I think that’s why this happens.

6. How many are other quotes? ‘Faces in the Water’ was a direct quote from a line in the Dishonored wiki, “Samuel reveals to Corvo that he has seen things of a strange and magical nature on the river, such as mysterious lights and faces in the water.” Because...yeah, on the nose. ‘Where you sleep at night’ is a partial phrase; ‘home is where you sleep at night,’ since Aveline and Isabela were comparing homes. And “Who Watches the Watchmen?” is obvious. :P

7. Which best reflects the plot of the story/content of the fanwork? Bold to assume that I write with PLOT in mind!

8. Which best reflects the theme of the story/fanwork? Probably the ones with asterisks? Which is also probably why I still like those titles, go figure.

9. Which best reflects the character voice of the story/POV of the fanwork? None of them???? I guess none of my characters are self-aware enough to title their own stories!

10. Which is your favourite? Either ‘breath (and all the ways of holding)’ or ‘building mountains in your memory,’ because I’m a sap!

If you're reading and want to play, go for it!
