Hi, hello, welcome!

This post doesn’t really contain a lot of new information for anyone who was previously following me on Tumblr, but I figure an orientation is in order. This is a brand shiny new (to me) space, so I’m trying to organize things a bit better, since my Tumblr tagging system was a bit of a mess.

I’m mostly in video game fandoms, with a few others sprinkled in. I enjoy a lot more fandoms than I actually write, since it takes me a while to feel comfortable enough with a new canon to put my own spin on it. (For frame of reference, it usually takes me at least two playthroughs of a new game before I start writing fic for it.)

So in alphabetical order, I enjoy:

• Borderlands (though I’ve only played BL2 and the Presequel)
• Dishonored
• Dragon Age
• Fallout (3, 4, and New Vegas)
• Harry Potter (mostly the books over the movies)
• Horizon: Zero Dawn
• Mass Effect
• Pillars of Eternity (I’ve only played the first game and White March DLC, not Deadfire)
• Prey
• Shadowrun (Dragonfall and Hong Kong; I have no experience with the tabletop game)
• Sunless Sea

I also enjoy Stardew Valley, Tolkien (LotR and the Hobbit), and Undertale, but don’t actively seek out content for them. Basically, I’ll like the cute art or share Feels, but don’t expect a lot of content creation!

I turned 30 this year and came later to fandom than most, when I was in my mid-20s. I fully admit I am not a ‘fandom old’ but more of an interested kibbitzer.

I’m mostly in fandom for the fic, and I write a lot! Mostly smut, mostly femslash and/or stuff featuring Real Big Dudes and femdom. I’m bi and write most characters as bi, unless they are specifically gay or lesbian in canon. I refer to my F/M ships as ‘F/M’ rather than ‘het,’ for the same reason I don’t call my F/F ships ‘lesbian’ when one or more people might be bi.

I believe very strongly in curating my own fandom experience, and until I figure out how to screen things better on Dreamwidth, please do not be offended if I do not immediately subscribe back or if I unfollow someone.

In general, my fandom philosophy is that I would rather take joy in sharing what I love than take pride in ripping something down. I can be very critical of the media I consume (especially in regard to queer content and how POC are treated by the narrative) but believe that I can still enjoy something while being aware of its flaws.

I am still figuring out how to tag and sort my posts, but as this account is still relatively empty I think it’s a good time to set up housekeeping! My current plans are to sort things by fandom (ex: “Fandom: Mass Effect”), relationship genre (ex: “Relationship: F/F”), ship with the character names in alphabetical order (ex: “Ship: Aveline/Isabela”), exchanges (ex: “Exchange: Femslash Exchange”) and the letters I use for exchanges. I will probably sort personal posts as “Personal” and meta by fandom and with a meta-specific tag, but that will take time to set up.

Thank you very much! I actually took a look at the tag hierarchy from larissa's Dreamwidth Primer so I'll still be making some tweaks, but I figure now is the time to lay the foundation.

SUNLESS SEA (AND SKIES) ARE SUCH GOOD GAMES and tbh the only reason I haven't replayed them in a while is because I'm fully aware of how much time I lose into those. :')

Though! Because I am nosy as heck, who are your favorite crew members and do you have any favorite storylines?

I also admit that Pillars of Eternity was a mixed bag for me. I've come to realize that I dislike that kind of real-time RPG party management gameplay, but I did love the characters and the setting a lot. Also a lot of angry yelling about why the writers chose to write Durance and the Grieving Mother the way they did! :(

This is where I have to confess that I'm not, like... GOOD... at Sunless Sea, so it's hard for me to lay claim to favourite crew or storylines because I rarely get all the way through them. I have vaguely fond memories of the Cladery Heir? And a small rat what fixes me ship.

PoE definitely wasn't my favourite gameplay style, but it was tolerable enough that I was still able to enjoy the story. Durance I ditched immediately (the pros of playing a priest) so I blissfully forget he exists. What bothered you most about Grieving Mother?

Fair enough! I'm terrible at Sunless Sea, but Sunless Skies has offered a much more merciful learning curve (as well as letting you actually reload saves after death asdfsfs) and has been feeding much of those same feels, at least. :')

The Grieving Mother is an incredibly cool concept, but I was mostly bothered by her on a meta level: in designing and casting the player's companions, we are already skewed towards a predominantly male cast; of the 8 recruitable companions in the base game, only 3 are ladies...which in itself isn't a huge disparity until we get to the fact that only the PC seems able to see or talk with the Grieving Mother at all. At best, IIRC, we get some companion talk about 'why did you pick up that peasant woman?' rather than the full on banter or dynamics with the rest of the group. It felt like a particularly odd (and unpleasant) narrative choice, especially in contrast to how inescapably Durance's unpleasantness and personal history is woven into the fabric of the main storyline, with him having SO MANY opportunities to say rude or horrible things to everyone else.

Again, on a meta level, really uncomfortable. Especially since they're both written by Chris Avellone (full disclosure: I did and do love Fallout New Vegas, and was unaware of the allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment until recently) and it felt like an uncomfortable narrative choice to go to such extremes between the characters, with this extremely vulgar misogynistic male priest who is so inescapably UGH because of how much dialogue he gets, and then....the Grieving Mother, who is a much more serene, silent character who uses her powers to go unnoticed most of the time.

Anyways. I actually liked the Grieving Mother quite a bit, but uh. There were sure some Choices that went into her design. And if there had been more female companions to begin with (not to discount Maneha and the Devil of Caroc, both of whom I love but are only in the White March!) I don't think it would have grated quite as badly for me.

Ohhhh, hm yeah :/ I appreciate that the female characters compromised almost all of my best beloveds, but I agree with there having been Choices Made. I truly did not find Durance especially enjoyable or necessary, even if the rest of the cast reliably called him out.

Yeah, the only reason I played with him at all was because of FOMO, honestly; I wanted the 'full' game experience and didn't want to miss out on anything, and that meant traveling with and trying out all the companions. But traveling with him wasn't actually any fun for me, which....yanno, I have other thoughts about what goes into making a game experience enjoyable as a game vs as an interactive visual novel, but I would just dump Durance if I ever replay this game.
